What Ugly Ingredients Are Lurking in Your Dog’s Treats?

Four Treats to Avoid

Milkbones:

Preserved with BHA & BHT:

These artificial preservatives have been shown to cause cancer in rats and promote tumor growth. BHT may act as an endocrine disruptor and damage healthy cells.

They’ve been banned in Japan, Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand

Meat and Bone Meal:

This unspecified meat source can come from dead, dying, diseased or down animals. This includes roadkill and animals that have died by ways other than slaughter. Unknown meats can also expose your dog to harmful medications such as antibiotics, steroids, and pentobarbital (Euthanasia Drug).

Ground Whole Wheat, Wheat Flour: Our wheat isn’t what it used to be, it’s highly contaminated with pesticides and has lost most of it’s nutritional value. There’s a reason many humans in the United States can no longer tolerate it. If many humans can’t tolerate it, it’s probably not ideal for a carnivore.

KONG Easy Treat:

Soybean Oil:

Studies on rats showed a decrease in good bacteria and an increase in bad bacteria in the gut, leading to colitis. High consumption of soybean oil has been linked to obesity and diabetes and potentially autism, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, depression and IBD.

Carageenan:

Animal studies indicates it may cause gut tumors and ulcers, and may even trigger colon cancer.

Kong Easy Treat also appears to contain a lot of sodium!

Avoid any spray “cheese”

Peanut Butter Similar to Jif and Skippy:

Sugar:

All foods/treats with added sugar should be avoided. If consumed regularly it can lead to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. Sugar also feeds yeast and cancer cells.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils:

These trans fats are linked to chronic inflammation that cause diseases like diabetes and heart disease

Opt for single ingredient peanut butter or nut butters instead.

Use in moderation.

Can be swapped for plain greek yogurt or pumpkin

Greenies:

Wheat Flour and Wheat Gluten:

Most dogs and cats don’t tolerate wheat to begin with but it definitely doesn’t help clean their teeth. Carbs break down into sugar and feed the bad bacteria in the mouth, leading to plaque and tartar build up.

Powdered Cellulose:

Also known as : Refined Wood Pulp. Yum!

Opt for single ingredient, natural chews instead
