Here’s why you need to mix up your dog or cats food:
Nutrients
Feeding the same food every day can limit the spectrum of nutrients. Every food has a different nutrient profile. Diversity in foods is essential to creating a healthy, happy and diverse gut microbiome.
Boredom
You wouldn’t want to eat the same food every day, so why should your pets? If you have a picky pet, variety is essential to broaden their palate. Variety is the spice of life! When a pet has eaten the same food it’s whole life, they may become fussy and introducing new foods can sometimes be difficult at first. It’s best to start as early as possible, introducing them to new foods and broadening their palate.
Sensitivities
Food sensitivities often develop due to overexposure to certain foods. By adding variety to the bowl we can often reduce the risk of developing certain sensitivities. If your dog already has sensitivities you will want to overtime find more than one food that you can feed so that they don’t develop a sensitivity to their current food. You’ll also want to work on healing the gut (PS. We can help you with this)
So what can you do and how?
The easiest option is to start rotating proteins in the brand that you’re currently feeding (assuming your pet doesn’t have any sensitivities already) Brands are typically formulated close enough that you can switch proteins without a transition period. Just grab a different protein each month!
Add some canned, freeze dried, raw or fresh foods into the mix. You can mix any of these with your dog or cats kibble, just be sure to reduce the kibble amount so that we don’t end up with overweight pets. When adding fresh foods or toppers, it’s OK for 10% of your pets meal to be unbalanced so add any healthy, pet safe foods that you want here. (Not sure what fresh foods you can add? There’s a ton, just ask and I’m happy to assist!)
This may be new to you and that is OK! I used to think I was giving Felicity variety by switching from the black bag to the green bag of Fromm(their ingredients are virtually the same). But no one ever told me otherwise so how was I supposed to know? I’m making it my mission to make sure I share the information with you that no one ever told me. But, ultimately it’s up to you what you do with it.
